I've noticed that I have these uncontrollable tics, like very fast muscle twitches all throughout the day. It isn't isolated to any particular part of my body. I just randomly have a spasm. Is this a common thing?
It is particularly troubling at night when I am just about to fall asleep. It seems to almost snap me out of sleeping. Definitely notice it more on a "bad day" than on a good one which is why I'm asking on this board. Any feedback is welcome, thanks everyone. |

Owl,
I've had this since the night of my accident. Never had it before in my life. It's been over 11 months now. It's a constant reminder of the crash and the more overstimulated i am the worse it gets. Peace, Jace

Yes, I have these tics. It is also worse for me when I am tired or had a drink of alcohol or caffeine, which I DO NOT do anymore. It also seems to precede full body pulsating I get all over my body at night. These pulses feel electrical and I am on gabapentin to control it. The gabapentin does not help the muscle twitching.

In July 2013 ran into a metal bar at a playground, remained conscious. CT normal. Headache subsided after a week. In August woke with thunderclap-type headache in right side of head, right eye was droopy. Ever since had electrical-type pulsating all over when falling asleep and during sleep. Strong muscle twitching occasionally. Chest pain in heart region, front left neck region, and left shoulder. Strong heartbeat noise in head and occasional weird noises in ears. Taking Gabapentin to control nighttime nerves. Other symptoms: anxiety attacks, goosebumps, fine motor coordination problems, sleep apnea, headaches/migraines, fatigue, unclear thinking. Update as of Jan. 2015 - almost all symptoms gone except for some tinnitus. Taking good care of myself except sometimes when I overdo it. |

I had muscle spasms sooooo bad especially my face that I could not talk.I had Primary doctors give me EVERY muscle relaxer medicine. None of them worked they all just made me WILD! I got to neuro and then a psychiatrist and started Valium and have not had any bad muscle spasms since. I also do acupuncture which has helped with my speech and pain amongst other things headaches, emotional issues etc.
I am not suggesting that anyone takes the Valium because it is a Benzo and I suggest this ONLY IF MUSCLE SPASMS REALLY BAD! ![]()

I also would get these spasms but never really put two and two together until now!
I find it happens most when I'm sitting/lying at peace. In the hospital we had to do a relaxation/meditation thing and it was horrible. The whole time my body just went nuts twitching in different places in a few second intervals. I was always worried someone would notice. Bedtime can be frustrating too! It's usually my arms, legs and worst of all, my neck. I've don't think I've noticed it in my face. It's not really a problem to me, just a bit annoying. Last edited by Weyhey; 10-25-2013 at 09:05 AM. I tic more than a Timex. Sometimes other people notice. I try not to worry about this one. It is not of itself painful, and is not severe enough to affect motor abilities. In fact, I can override it if necessary.

Hello, I received my concussion over a year ago due to a soccer ball being kicked at close range into my temple. I have more ticks and spasms. I also will move my leg up and down really fast, especially on my "bad days" I never did this before. It really sucks.

I have also suffered from these muscles spasms and tics since the auto accident I was in that caused the concussion. I did not have them before I sustained the concussion.
It can be a symptom of neuroendocrine dysfunction which can be caused by concussion. Since I have been placed on replacement hormones in the last several weeks, the tics and random spasms have reduced. It can take a year for the hormone to become balanced in my body, so I'm giving it that long to disappear, although I'm hoping it takes less time. An endocrinologist experienced with treating hormone imbalance caused by concussion can treat neuroendocrine dysfunction. Unfortunately, they are few and far between... |

Thank you!!! I have also experienced these muscle spasms wince my car accident. I told many doctors and my psychologist said it may be due to anxiety. I never had this before, it is relieving to know others are experiencing the same symptom!

I knew I wasn't alone with this. I developed tic movements after a second small concussion in football and have had another concussion since then. I have seen a team of neurologists who seem to think that the tics are only from stress and anxiety which I do not believe because before this all I had very little of.
I don't tic very much any more but I took ativan(lorezapam for about a week and a half) and withdrew really bad so I had to taper off, now I take topamax which has helped. I have tic movements mainly in my head, where I twitch to the right, but also in my eyes, face, front of my neck, legs, pecs, arms, and feet. I also noticed my tics got really bad when I tried to sleep and so I used to think of a song, tapped a beat with my fingers or feet or played guitar and the tics would stop. My neurologist said tics are distractable. My head is so sensitive from my concussions that I don't take showers otherwise my tic movements flare up again. I've been taking baths. |
