Default Smoking after concussion?

Passed my impact test a week ago. Some pain in the place where I hit my head. Is it ok to smoke marijuana? (Street marijuana) I live in DC where it's decriminalized.

I think you will only get opinions on this question?

Now I due cary a MM card and use it only for sleep, PTSD, which helps....But Im nearing my 9 year acedent date....

I personaly think it would not be good for you, and drinking even worse!

Good luck on your choice.

tydurden,

Welcome to NeuroTalk.

1st, The ImPACT test has limited value. It does not relate to the brain's tolerance for another concussion or any other stress.

2nd, THC is a stressor. Plus, the carbon monoxide in the smoke is a serious stressor. Plus, the benzene and other toxins.

So, just know that you are putting your brain under stress.

Hey thanks for the answers guys. My doctor actually said it was ok to drink alcohol in moderation and smoke marijuana in moderation. Has anyone done either?

my impact scores are normal but im still symptomatic. Impact is a guide, but does not mean your brain has healed.

ImPACT's value is more to keep athletes off the playing field. It is weak at determining recovery levels beyond a very basic level.

In the early days of ImPACT, players often returned to play based on their own desire to play and willingness to ignore or hide symptoms. ImPACT created a system where the player can not fake his condition. It became the backbone of 'stay off the field' decisions. It became a default 'return to play' system even though the researchers admitted it was not complete enough to determine a broader recovery level. It is a system to establish a bare minimum of improvement before returning to play.

Ok thanks. Just wondering why my doctor would say its alright to both drinking and smoking moderately. My friends and I party a lot so I am just curious as to when would be a good return timetable for me to start drinking/smoking again?

If anyone has info or experience thatd be great

The specialist say alcohol should be limited to a single serving. Intoxicants are rough on an injured brain. And, yes, tydurden, your brain is still injured.

But, I doubt you can agree. It appears you want to do more than drink and smoke moderately. Try to remember that getting smashed/wasted/baked is as rough on the brain as a concussion. You may experience hangovers like never before.

My doctor told me to not drink at all. When I did some light drinking in college, the hangover was miserable. (one 16 ounce beer with pizza) I struggled a good portion of the next day.

Over the years, we have had a fair share of people who sustained concussions while and likely because they were intoxicated. Stumbles, falls, etc. I have a number of TBI friends who were injured in auto accidents due to drunk driving, either their own or others.

Default Never!

Sorry buddy. Partying days are over. Focus on recovery or your symptoms are here to stay, or you could drink.give yourself a chemical concussion and see how bad this can get. Cause it can get pretty freaking bad. I would avoid alcohol for the next two years and then reevaluate your situation. No joke. Look up the member Claritan he was a partyer, took him two and a half years to recover. Do your future self and family a favor. Abstain from alcohol. If you have access to cbd weed. Vaporize it.in medicinal doses. Dont smoke.anything.

If you live in DC, can't you get medicinal marijuana? Maybe you should see a different doctor? Just a suggestion.
And I would have to agree with the other comments. i don't see when you had your concussion but if you still have physical pain on your head, I'm assuming it was recent and you shouldn't be drinking alcohol as it can slow down brain recovery. Additionally, the last thing you want is to experience another concussion which is more likely under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol and traumatic brain injury are related. Between 30-50% of people with TBI were injured while under the influence. Be patient. You'll be able to party hardy again some day but for now take care of your brain!!
